  • Clocks slay timeā€¦ time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops does time come to life.

  • There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order.

  • Every man is a hero in his own story, Princess. Murderers don’t believe that they’re to blame for what they do. Thieves, they think they deserve the money they take. Dictators, they believe they have the right – for the safety of their people and the good of the nation – to do whatever they wish.

  • I try to avoid having thoughts. They lead to other thoughts, and – if you’re not careful – those lead to actions. Actions make you tired. I have this on rather good authority from someone who once read it in a book.

  • I never make fun of ladies… Mocking a woman is like drinking too much wine. It may be fun for a short time, but the hangover is hell.

  • Above me, wind does its best
    to blow leaves off
the aspen tree a month too soon.
No use wind. All you succeed
in doing is making music, the noise
    of failure growing beautiful.

  • Yet another piece of the solution dropped into place when my friend Judy said that the problem was trying to stop the jealousy and competitiveness, and that the main thing was not to let it fuel my self-loathing. She said it was nuts for me to try to be happy for this other writer. I cannot tell you how much this helped. I was raised in a culture that promotes this competitiveness, this insatiability, this fantasy of needing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, and then, in the next breath, shames you for any feelings of longing or envy of fear that it will always be someone else’s turn. I was only doing what I had been groomed to do.

  • A moral position is not a slogan, or wishful thinking. It doesn’t come from outside or above. It begins inside the heart… and grows from there.

  • God’s joy moves from unmarked box to unmarked box,
from cell to cell. As rainwater, down into flowerbed.
    As roses, up from ground.
Now it looks like a plate of rice and fish,
now a cliff covered with vines,
    now a horse being saddled.
    It hides within these,
till one day it cracks them open.

  • I love short stories because I believe they are the way we live. They are what our friends tell us, in their pain and joy, their passion and rage, their yearning and their cry against injustice. We can sit all night with our friend while he talks about the end of his marriage, and what we finally get is a collection of stories about passion, tenderness, misunderstanding, sorrow, money; those hours and days and moments when he was absolutely married, whether he and his wife were screaming at each other, or sulking around the house, or making love. While his marriage was dying, he was also working; spending evenings with friends, rearing children; but those are other stories. Which is why, days after hearing a painful story by a friend, we see him and say: How are you? We know that by now he may have another story to tell, or he may be in the middle of one, and we hope it is joyful.

  • We who are
    your closest friends
    feel the time
    has come to tell you
    that every Thursday
    we have been meeting,
    as a group,
    to devise ways
    to keep you
    in perpetual uncertainty
    frustration
    discontent and
    torture
    by neither loving you
    as much as you want
    nor cutting you adrift.
    Your analyst is
    in on it,
    plus your boyfriend
    and your ex-husband;
    and we have pledged
    to disappoint you
as long as you need us.
    In announcing our
    association
    we realize we have
    placed in your hands
    a possible antidote
    against uncertainty
    indeed against ourselves.
    But since our Thursday nights
    have brought us
    to a community
    of purpose
    rare in itself
    with you as
    the natural center,
    we feel hopeful you
    will continue to make unreasonable
    demands for affection
    if not as a consequence
    of your disastrous personality
then for the good of the collective.
